Cold Calling: the Myth of Cold Calling 2.0 and Other Urban Legends

Cold Calling: the Myth of Cold Calling 2.0 and Other Urban Legends

I receive Google Alerts daily on my favorite subject of conversation, cold calling, and I read them. I’m always on the lookout for an opportunity to contribute to a discussion on cold calling, sales, or any other related subject, especially if I can inject some self-promotion!

In the over four years that I’ve been following this subject, I’ve gotten very good at spotting trends, and there’s one that is popular right now: The idea of “Cold Calling 2.0.”

Whoever coined this term no doubt took the name from Web 2.0. However, the idea that cold calling is any different today than it was in the past is far-fetched and ignorant at best. In my opinion, attempting to dupe salespeople and small business owners that there is anything new or different about cold calling that might work in today’s economy is problematic at best, and downright unethical and dishonest at worst.

Here’s an example: I had a coaching call today with an individual who spent over four figures (yes, four figures!) on a package from one of these “Cold Calling 2.0” gurus. What was he taught for that obscene amount of money? To send e-mails to companies, pretending to ask for help, all with the lowly goal of learning who the contact person is.

Well, that’s a lot of effort – and a bit of lying – just to find out who the contact person is. After all, the sales interaction doesn’t even begin until that contact person is, well, contacted … and I’m guessing the recommended advice is the old, ineffective, obsolete cold call.

Let’s face it: A cold call is a cold call is a cold call. I don’t care if it’s a direct, in-your-face, old-school cold call, or a sneaky, pretend-to-be-someone-I’m-not-to-get-a-contact-name cold call. (And if all you have is a contact name, you still haven’t even made the cold call!)

Here are some key reasons why cold calling – whether it’s “old-school” style, or especially this sneaky “cold calling 2.0,” continues to become less and less effective as time goes on:

1. Cold calling lacks honesty and integrity. I’ve been talking a lot lately about honesty and integrity. They need to be the foundation for everything you do, end of story. Without building on those principles, nothing else you do will last for the long term. Sure, you might get a lead and maybe even a sale now and then by being sneaky and telling little white lies, but what will that do for your reputation and self-esteem in the long term?

I have many clients and students who now receive 100% of their business from referrals. Do you think this could be possible if they didn’t live and do business by the highest, utmost standards of honesty and integrity? No way.

A big part of the “cold calling 2.0” myth is using a new “angle” to cold call. Well, I hate to break it to you, but honest, ethical people don’t have to use “angles” or “gimmicks” to do business.

2. Cold calling provides zero value to others. Another subject that’s coming up a lot in my talks and programs lately is that of giving value first. If you give first, with no expectation of reward, and no strings attached to your giving of value, you will reap rewards like you’ve never dreamed possible. People will look up to you as a trusted business adviser, they will respect you, and they will see you in an entirely different light than your competition.

Here’s the clincher: You can’t give value first if your initial contact with a prospect is through a cold call. Instead of positioning yourself as a generous provider of value, all a cold call does is position you as a hungry salesperson who just wants to get a sale … with no regard to providing any value first. This is precisely why closing rates of leads that come from cold calling are the lowest of all, or as my friend and author Jeffrey Gitomer has said, “Cold calling has the lowest percentage of sales call success.” It’s also why prospects tend to trust cold callers far less than other salespeople – they wonder what’s wrong with you and your company that you have been forced to cold call – the last resort of a desperate salesperson – to drum up business. It doesn’t speak highly of you or of your company’s financial stability.

3. Cold calling strictly limits your income by time. Due to the sheer amount of time required to make enough cold calls to get enough qualified leads, you will never make a high income by cold calling. Think about it – with all the time it takes to run appointments, meet with prospects and customers, handle customer service issues, attend sales meeting, write proposals, prepare reports, attend training (including your own continuing education), and so on, how on earth are there enough hours in every week, day, and month to make all those cold calls? There simply aren’t! Sure, if your product or service is a great offer and you’re good at cold calling, you might manage to eek out 100% of quota and hang on to your job for another month, but do you really want to spend the rest of your life eeking out your quota and starting over again next month? Of course not! I assume if you’re taking the time to read this article, it’s because you’re focused and have high goals for your career and your life and want to make the big bucks!

You’re not going to make the big bucks cold calling. Even if you’re some kind of cold calling genius who can make it work, you’re going to severely limit yourself by time and never reach the six-figure and higher income brackets. The only way, and I really mean the only way, to achieve that is through leverage. You need to have lead-generation systems in place that work exponentially, and simultaneously, to generate the quality and quantity of leads you’ll need to have to make the big bucks. That’s what will open the doors to promotions to upper management, consulting opportunities, or my own path – becoming a bestselling author and speaker.

If you’re out in the ocean, you have two choices: Swim back to shore and live on, or tread water until you die. Cold calling, including the new, so-called “cold calling 2.0” tactics, are treading water. Do you want to break through and move to the next level and beyond, or do you want to continue treading water?

Hopefully those points clear up this idea of “cold calling 2.0” and expose that urban legend as just that – a legend. I’m tired of hearing from struggling salespeople who have spent hundreds, or in some cases, over a thousand dollars on these “new cold calling” courses, only to have them fail, spend a mere on my system, and find out it was the answer to their prayers. Save your money, use your brains, and think for yourself … and stop treading water with those ineffective and time-consuming cold calls!

Frank Rumbauskas, the New York Times best-selling author who revolutionized selling, has taught tens of thousands of salespeople and small business owners how to stop cold calling forever! For 10 free chapters of Frank’s breakthrough book, please visit http://www.nevercoldcall.com.

Virgin Media Takes Sky to Court

Virgin Media Takes Sky to Court

Virgin Media (VM) has taken Sky to court in the latest step in the ongoing public row between the two companies.

Sky and Virgin Media fell out at the beginning of March over the price to be charged for the carriage of the Sky Basic Channels by the cable TV provider. The two sides failed to reach an agreement before the previous contract expired and as a result VM customers lost the Sky Basic Channels, including Sky One, Sky News and Sky Sports News.

The very public fall-out and subsequent channel loss led to customers of Virgin Media both criticising and supporting their own digital TV provider. Some of those who ended up disappointed at losing such channels immediately cancelled their contracts and switched to Sky, whilst others who showed their loyalty to VM were rewarded with discounted contracts and extra services.

However, despite no agreement being reached between the two companies, Virgin Media threatened to take Sky to the High Court to resolve the row and now has done so claiming Sky was abusing its dominant market position. Sky has denied doing so and has said that the action was “without foundation” and called on Virgin to resume negotiations. VM claims that Sky tried to double its prices for the Basic Sky Channels. However, Sky says the increase would have cost VM just 3 pence per customer per day.

It is not just the price of the Sky Channels which is being challenged. Virgin Media is also challenging the rates imposed by Sky for carrying Virgin’s TV channels. It is believed that Sky recently renegotiated the price it would pay for carrying channels such as LivingTV, Challenge and Bravo, before it announced that the price for its own channels to VM would be rising. Virgin Media is hoping that it will be able to get the Sky Channels at a lower price than is being asked for and at the same time increase the price it charges Sky for its own channels to bring them more in line with current market trends.

Virgin Media brought the action under the UK Competition Act 1998 and Article 82 of the EC Treaty.

“Sky, which accounts for almost 70% of the country’s pay TV subscribers, is dominant in the UK Pay TV market and has engaged in a strategy to stifle competition by using its dominance against Virgin Media,” the company said in a statement.

Sky denied the claims and its chief operating officer Mike Darcey said that they had invited VM to return to the negotiating table and that the services Sky was offering for the higher fee would have meant a “bigger and better choice” for customers. Sky say that along with the Sky Basic Channels they had offered to include Sky Three and Sky Arts along with On Demand and High Definition services to VM customers for the increased fee.

“Virgin Media is saving money as a result of this dispute but it hasn’t reduced prices. Millions of customers have lost access to the shows they enjoy and it is clear that many resent paying full prices for fewer channels,” Mr Darcy added.

The case is ongoing.

Pre Written Speeches Which you Can Turn to in your Hour of Need

Pre Written Speeches Which you Can Turn to in your Hour of Need

So, you’ve been asked to speak at a wedding. Already you can feel your knees shaking and your throat closing up so tightly that you can barely get a squeak out. This is a normal state of affairs for most people when they learn they have to give a speech of any kind, not only a wedding speech. The good thing about giving a wedding speech however, is the fact that you have at hand, pre written speeches which you can turn to in your hour of need.

These speeches are for the most part, works of art and depending on where you get them from, might even cost you an arm and a leg. But then again, what’s an arm and a leg if you can get up in front of a crowd of people secure in the knowledge that you have a doozy of a wedding speech to give.

This in fact, is the reason why so many people resort to using pre written speeches. For one thing, these have been written by professionals so you know that every penny you spend on them is good, and for another thing if you’re not one of the most literary minded people in the world then you don’t have the hassle of having to write out your speech – all you need to do is to use one of the many pre written speeches.

The one thing you need to be careful about when using pre written speeches however, is that your speech doesn’t end up sounding impersonal. This can very easily happen since none of these pre written speeches were written with you in mind. They are of a necessity a generic formula transformed into something that sounds wonderful, but which is also very impersonal.

So even if you use pre written speeches you might find that you still have to have change things around slightly to make the speech sound more like you, and definitely more personal. Just because you use pre written speeches it doesn’t mean that you have to stick with the formula exactly.

You can change things around slightly to better suit your own personal style of speaking. A tweak here and a small change to reflect your normal speech patterns will make all the difference to your speech, and no one will even know that you are using a pre written speech.

Just remember to substitute the real names of the bridal couple for the names given in the pre written speeches! You really wouldn’t want to say John and Lindsey, when you meant to say John and Danielle!

Liverpool – ‘the World in One City’

Liverpool – ‘The World in One City’

Sustainable Growth…

Among other things, Liverpool promises that creative industries, culture and tourism will form the basis of the 2008 project and that the year will be a continuous festival that will feature something for everyone. In addition to this, long term projects including the regeneration of the waterfront and various cultural centres, such as the Tate Liverpool, will ensure that the development is sustainable and that the improvements will continue to benefit the city long after the title has been passed on.

Intelligent Investment?

Changes in national and international perceptions regarding Liverpool pave the way for potentially profitable investment opportunities. This is because, as the foundations are laid for its transformation into a city of world class proportions, investment into the city becomes an increasingly attractive option. And of course, property is the ideal long term investment. Two million additional tourists are expected in Liverpool in 2008 – they will need food, and more importantly accommodation for the duration of their stay, meaning that there is a small fortune to be made off property ownership in the city. Central to this opportunity is the development of the residential wing of the new King’s Waterfront by David McLean and City Lofts which is set for completion at the end of 2007.

Although residential property investment can be a source of stress because of the inconvenience of finding and managing tenants, City Lofts will manage your property and ensure that the process is smooth and that both the tenant and the landowner are satisfied. This detracts from the nuisance of owning property and makes investment into the new Liverpool development even more viable. Investing in property also ensures a comfortable nest egg for retirement, either as a mortgage-free home in cosmopolitan Liverpool, or as a source of income for those choosing to remain where they are. Either way, with the property market set to boom and the utility and security associated with property investments, it would be a mistake for those wishing to invest money, not to consider the new City Lofts development in Liverpool.

409a Compliance on Written Plan

Posted in Written on August 27th, 2010 by admin – Be the first to comment

409a Compliance on Written Plan

Edison and Upper Saddle River, NJ – February 21, 2008 – The Internal Revenue Service recently issued Notice 2007-78 that provides plan sponsors an extension to December 31, 2008 to maintain compliance with written documentation relative to deferred compensation plans. Written language of a deferred compensation plan must be in compliance with the regulation as of the end of this year. Plans, therefore, have extra time to be modified to comply in the written form, but must continue to be in compliance operationally with Section 409A. Where written plan provisions don’t comply with the regulation, plan sponsors will not violate 409A if:

• The plan operates in compliance with 409A;

• Is amended on or before the December 31, 2008 deadline; and

• Complies with 409A retroactive to January 1, 2007.

What does this mean? Although the IRS has extended the deadline for compliance relative to written plan documentation, the plan itself must already operate under the 409A regulations. Therefore, there is no relief in the manner in which deferrals are made. Some of the key deferral aspects that 409A stipulates and for which compliance should already be in effect are as follows:

• Timing of deferrals. Deferral elections must be made before December 31 for compensation that will be deferred during the following calendar year. For example, compensation that will be deferred during 2008 would have required that the election be made before December 31, 2007. The exception to this election rule includes any “performance-based compensation”.

• Deferral of “performance-based compensation”. Performance-based compensation is any compensation that is contingent on satisfying pre-established performance objectives that cover a period of at least 12 consecutive months. An election to defer performance-based compensation may be made up to 6 months before the end of the period; this does not include amounts that will be paid regardless of performance, or if the amount is based on performance objectives that are certain to be met at the time they were established. Performance objectives are considered “pre-established” if they are documented, in writing, no later than 90 days from the beginning of the period. For example, assuming a short-term incentive plan runs from January 1 through December 31, 2008, with awards based on performance, a participant may elect to defer this form of compensation until June 30, 2008, so long as the objectives were established, in writing, by March 31, 2008, and that the level of performance cannot be currently ascertained.

• Changes to deferral options. A participant may change the form or timing of deferral, so long as: a) the election will not be effective until 12 months after the election is made; b) payments affected by such change are delayed for at least 5 years from the original payment date; and c) elections relative to distributions as of a specified time or on a fixed schedule are made at least 12 months before the scheduled payment date. This provision excludes payments made as a result of the participant’s death or disability.

• Delay in Payments for “Key Employees”. 409A requires that payments under a deferred compensation plan must be delayed 6 months for key employees, as defined by IRC §416(i). A key employee is one that, at any time during the plan year, is:

* an officer having an annual compensation greater than 0,000;

* a 5% owner of the company; or

* a 1% owner of the company having an annual compensation of more than 0,000.

Given that the administrative changes are already underway relative to deferrals, the following questions relative to written documentation should be evaluated and action taken by December 31, 2008 to comply with the transition relief period:

• Are there any aspects of the plan that still conflict with 409A?

• Does the plan’s language comply with the requirements under the regulation?

• Are deferral elections made on a written vehicle that complies with the regulation?

• Are elections for performance-based compensation made appropriately? Are performance objectives pre-established and is the level of performance against these objectives substantially unknown at the time that deferrals can be elected?

• Are changes to deferral options properly documented within the plan?

• Does the plan document reflect the following:

* Is in the form of a written document;

* States a specific formula to calculate deferred compensation;

* Indicates the payment schedule or triggering events;

* Specifies a six-month payout delay for “key employees”;

* Provides specific language regarding acceleration of distributions; and

* Includes a clause regarding substantial risk of forfeiture on deferred amounts?

Compliance with 409A is a key aspect of successful administration of deferred compensation plans, and obviously, avoidance of scrutiny and penalties. A thorough examination of administration of your deferred compensation plans and implementation of changes to maintain compliance of written documentation is essential before the December 31, 2008 deadline. Outside professional advice can provide an objective look at your deferred compensation arrangements, and provide the necessary guidance to move towards full compliance with 409A.

Predict The Weather As Well As The Guy On TV

Predict The Weather As Well As The Guy On TV

The weather resources on the Internet are many and varied. They range from highly sophisticated dedicated sites to national newsfeeds that produce fairly comprehensive weather reports, to regional news organizations that feature weather as part of their online news service. These can be from TV and radio stations or local newspapers. In addition, the major search engines have a weather feature that allows you to consult for forecasts in your local area.

In all cases, however, their weather information is gathered principally from national sources – in almost all cases, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA. We’re going to review here the principal dedicated weather sites online, and give a quick critique to what the search engines and national news sites provide.

Perhaps the best known dedicated commercial weather site is www.weather.com, a spin-off of the cable television network The Weather Channel. This website allows you to punch in your zip code for local weather, or a city/town name for some other location. The site will give you temperature readings, wind chill and precipitation forecasts. It will provide forecasts on an hour-by-hour basis, for the weekend, and will peer into the future with a ten-day forecast on one page. Graphics include satellite photos and Doppler radar representations of storm movements.

Much of this information is gathered from the NOAA’s National Weather Service website. Here you will find “official” U.S. weather, marine, fire and aviation forecasts, warnings, climate forecasts and information about meteorology at www.nws.noaa.gov/. The NOAA has a massive network of weather stations nationwide, providing readouts for highly localized areas. It’s also user friendly, with a wealth of visual information provided by satellites and other graphics tools. There is a vast amount of marine weather data available here as well.

The Weather Underground (www.wunderground.com) is a spin-off of the University of Michigan’s weather website. Weather Underground is a commercial site peppered with advertising that presents its forecasts based on zip code, city, or on a clickable U.S. map. It also has international forecasts – click by country – and a comprehensive list of maps on its home page that show national trends for such factors as temperature, wind, visibility, precipitation, snow depth, etc. Register with them and send ten dollars and they’ll email you your daily forecast.

The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor’s weather lab: http://cirrus.sprl.umich.edu/wxnet/ is among the pioneers of online weather products. Currently, they maintain a quality national weather forecast site – but perhaps their most valuable resource for weather addicts is their list of 300 links to weather related sites.

Intellicast (www.intellicast.com) is an advertiser supported national site that will also email you your daily forecast. Their site offers a clickable map and the usual categories of satellite and long range forecasts. Www.weather.org is another of the lesser national websites that is exclusively for weather. Their site has an interesting map of worldwide conditions that is constantly changing as the center of their homepage. Along with the usual localized and national weather feeds, the site offers weathercams, tides and currents, and commentary from the Farmers Almanac.

Other dedicated locations include www.AccuWeather.com and www.Weatherbug.com. Weatherbug offers downloadable software that provides your local weather forecast and weather report. Yahoo and Google both provide weather forecast features, as do the national news feeds. CNN.com/WEATHER will provide international weather news and five day forecasts by location. USA Today has global forecasts and information on meteorological topics such as global warming at: http://asp.usatoday.com/weather/weatherfront.aspx.

Finally, Unisys has chosen to showcase its Weather Processor analysis software package by building a website for global weather information at http://weather.unisys.com/. Not something you’d expect just looking at their main homepage. Apparently even people who do tech consulting and enterprise servers need to know if it’s going to rain.

Hair Piece Repair: Secrets They Don’t Want You to Know

Hair piece repair. You may be familiar with the term. Have you ever gotten a small tear in your hairpiece, and wondered why you had to discard a perfectly good hair piece full of hair? Has your hair replacement provider ever told you that your hair piece was too badly damaged to fix? Ever wish you could get a little extra hair added to that old favorite hair system of yours? The truth is: you can!

You see, hair pieces are actually very easy to repair. Rips and tears in a base can easily be patched or repaired, hair can be added to areas where it has been thinning, and lace fronts and tape tabs can be replaced. If you actually knew the severity of some of the damaged hair pieces that have been successfully been repaired, you would probably be disgusted that your current hair replacement company has kept you in the dark on how easy and cost effective it can be to repair a hair piece.

The secret they don’t want you to know

Let’s face it, AT LEAST 99% of our competitors do not want you to know that hair piece and wig repair really works. Other companies don’t have to repair your hair piece, they think they can simply tell you the piece is irreparable and you’ll have no choice but to order a new one. In fact, hair piece repair is so effective and cheap, it could potentially put some of our competitors out of business. They need to keep selling expensive hair systems to stay in business, and every time they repair a hair piece, that’s one less sale of a brand new piece at full price. In reality, 75% of all hair repairs can easily be performed for under 0.00. Some things, like replacing a lace front for example, may be slightly more expensive, yet still pale in comparison to the price of buying a brand new unit. Chances are, if your hair replacement company is charging over 0 for a standard hair piece repair, or they tell you your hair piece cannot be repaired, most likely they aren’t being straight with you!

Next time you’ve got a hair piece that needs some work done, don’t throw it away! A simple search for “Hair Piece Repair” should get you headed in the right direction. There are some companies that are truthful with their customers, and won’t just try to upsell you on a new hair piece. Hair piece repair can save you lots of money every year, especially if you’re wearing custom hair. Cut down on the number of hair pieces you purchase annually by simply sending old pieces in to be repaired. Generally the process is both quick and effective.

Hair-necessities has provided hair piece repair services directly to consumers for years, and is an online leader in the hair replacement industry. Visit www.hair-necessities.com to learn more about the variety of hair pieces available online and believe it or not, no matter how bad you think your hair piece is damaged, we can probably repair it for 75 bucks – and it doesn’t cost you anything to find out!

Steps To Be Taken In Personal Injury Accident Claim In Uk

Steps To Be Taken In Personal Injury Accident Claim In Uk

There are certain steps to be taken in personal injury accident claim in UK to settle the case. In the present scenario, most of the people in UK do not know what has to be done after a personal injury accident. Since it is a long and delayed process, they are not willing to deal with it. Most of the citizens of UK are not aware of the fact that are steps involved in the settlement of a personal injury accident claim. These steps are to be taken in personal injury accident claim in UK to settle the case. While claiming compensation for personal injury, it is advisable to settle the case out of court, as it would save a lot of time. Also you can avoid going to court and involving in lengthy court battle.

Some of the steps to be taken in personal injury accident claim in UK are stated below:

” In case of any auto accident the victim has to seek immediate medical assistance. In an injury caused due to accident, some symptoms may manifest immediately and some may take two or three hours after the accident. An apposite medical care is needed for the injured person. So when any accident is taken to the police officer the victim should not commit any thing to the police about the injuries developed in the event of the accident. Most victims in UK do not experience any symptoms of the injury immediately after the accident. A complete medical check up would enable one to know about his condition. So the first step to be taken in personal injury accident claim in UK is to seek immediate medical assistance as this would be a substantial proof in making a personal injury compensation claim.

” The personal injury claim has to be made depending on the severity of the injury. Some of the personal injuries might get healed with the combination of medicines, physical therapy and rest while some of the injuries might be a lifetime disability. So the most important step to be taken in personal injury accident claim in UK is to have a thorough medical check up and the amount to be claimed as compensation for personal injury has to be decided on the basis of the severity of the injury.

” The other important step to be taken in personal injury accident claim in UK is to take proper legal assistance in order to make a successful personal injury claim. Seek a no win no fee solicitor to deal with the case because you do not have the need to pay them from your money. If your case wins a compensation claim, your ‘no win no fee’ solicitor will be paid by the third party insurance company. If your case looses, your solicitor will not be paid.
